Thank you for visiting SeDaTE , a partnership between The PLUS Company and the North Shore – Long Island Jewish Health System that has been used to grant priviliges for moderate sedation for 0 healthcare professionals since July of 2004, and counting. The software tracks each participant’s progress through the course, tests their expertise on the subject matter, asks them to evaluate the course, and finally, complete a moderate sedation compliance statement that they’ve reviewed the course and accompanying materials. SeDaTE is designed to be incorporated into the approval process for non-anesthesiologists who provide moderate sedation in a variety of healthcare settings. MEETS AND EXCEEDS the applicable standards set by The Joint Commission. STANDARDIZES EDUCATION & APPROVAL PROCESS for non-anesthesiologists administering moderate sedation. AUTOMATES many administrative tasks including documentation of competency. SECURE & SEARCHABLE online database. Two types of defined users access the learning management software via the internet or their organization's intranet. The first type of user, “Practitioners” view the Course, review “Supplemental Materials” pass a post-test to demonstrate mastery of the material, electronically sign a compliance statement, and evaluate the Course before receiving a Certificate of Completion. The second type of user, “Administrators”, have ongoing access to a database of sedating-approved practitioners within their organization. The Safe and Effective Use of Procedural Sedation: This sedation course is an Internet-based application that delivers to non-anesthesia healthcare providers a video-based education and training on safe sedation practices. The program provides practitioners with education required for safe moderate sedation drug delivery based upon standardized operational guidelines. It will also provide a thorough review of the drugs used, their advantages and disadvantages, and the safe administration of these agents. The training program is designed for practitioners to become properly trained, qualified and approved to administer sedation in their facilities. Dlugacz, PhD Senior Vice President and Chief of Clinical Quality, Education and Research Krasnoff Quality Management Institute North Shore-LIJ Health System Sean Benjamin O’Dea Distance Learning Consultant & Multimedia Creator The PLUS Company/Krasnoff Quality Management Institute TARGET AUDIENCE: This activity has been developed for non-anesthesia healthcare providers- Physicians, Registered Nurses, Physician Assistants (Practitioners) who administer and monitor patient sedation in locations outside of the Operating Room (e.g., Cath Lab, GI Lab, Radiology, out-patient ambulatory locations/practices) EDUCATIONAL GOAL: The goal is to foster proficiency and confidence through continuing education and training. Participants will learn to maintain and enhance their administration skills, techniques and knowledge to provide safe sedation. Successful completion of the sedation course (80% on examination) will serve as a necessary credential for performing moderate sedation in areas outside of the Operating Room and will be a necessary requirement for those physicians requesting this privilege on appointment or reappointment. In order to successfully pass the course, the individual must demonstrate proficiency in the defined areas. Therefore, this equivalency training can enhance successful outcomes. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After participating in this activity, participants should be able to: Identify the anatomic, physiologic and pathophysiologic considerations associated with the moderate sedation to ensure safe patient care. Recognize and effectively manage patients experiencing respiratory insufficiency, airway obstruction and/or hemodynamic changes to reduce untoward patient reactions. Recall the appropriate; patient selection, monitoring equipment, personnel that must be present in an area in which a patient is sedated, and the required documentation for record keeping. Recognize the uses and side effects of commonly used sedatives, anxiolytics and other medications when administered alone and in combination for moderate sedation. Participate in data gathering and performance improvement initiatives. ACCREDITATION: North Shore-LIJ Health System is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide Continuing Medical Education for physicians. CREDIT DESIGNATION: The North Shore-LIJ Health System designates this Continuing Medical Education activity for a maximum of 1.5 AMA PRA Category I credits TM . Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. METHOD OF PHYSICIAN PARTICIPATION: To receive credit, the participant must: Register for the Course View "The Safe and Effective Use of Procedural Sedation" in its entirety. Answer at least 80% of the post test questions correctly. Complete a program evaluation. Submit the post test, evaluation and credit registration form to the website. Upon successful completion of the 5 steps outlined above, a CME Certificates and/or Verification of Attendance will be e-mailed along with a Certificate of Completion to the address submitted during Course registration.
